Elijah Dawson '19

Sophomore business major Elijah Dawson ’19 knows the importance of internships in preparing for his future. So when Dr. Paul Mason, dean of the Walter F. and Virginia Johnson School of Business, mentioned to him that an internship was available at Abilene new car dealer Arrow Ford during the summer, he grabbed the opportunity.

“I’ve been told that internships are basically the future, businesses tend to find applicants who have had internships,” said Dawson, who serves on the Business Student Advocates organization. “Dr. Mason served on the board of Abilene Chamber of Commerce Workforce Task Force with the owner of Arrow Ford, and that connection led to my internship.”

Dawson is quick to credit his professors in the School of Business for his success as an intern.

“Ann Spence, Richard Brozovic and Elizabeth Watson have all been a major contribution to my success. They are great professors and have helped me to understand professionalism and different aspects of business.”

During the internship, Dawson learned about all the different aspects of the company and ended up working in sales, where he was so successful that Arrow decided to keep him on in a part time capacity when he returned to McMurry this fall, something the company rarely does.

“We learned how to build relationships and strengthen our communications skills,” Dawson said. “It was a great learning experience.”

Dawson, a Dean’s List student throughout his time at McMurry, had already planned to do two internships while at McMurry and he is planning to concentrate on finding an internship next summer related to his focus on IT computer information systems.

He already has some experience in the area while working with the Taylor County Probation office in their IT section during the summer as a second job. He also did statistical compilations for the Abilene Young Professionals and worked at the Abilene YMCA.

Whenever that second internship opportunity presents itself next summer, Dawson will be ready to take full advantage of it.
