When Thierry Tchenko shoots he scores, and not just on the basketball court.
The McMurry University senior is a leader on the Men’s Basketball team, but he’s also leading the student body as President of McMurry’s Student Government. The political science major who chose to attend McMurry to be a part of War Hawks Basketball, is staying for so many other reasons.
“I choose McMurry because of basketball. However, basketball has not been the only reason why I have stayed,” said Tchenko. “The political science department, the McMurry community and the organizations I'm involved with on campus have all played a role in my time at McMurry.”
In addition to student government and McMurry Basketball, the 6’1’’ guard from Houston, Texas is actively involved in Fellowship for Christian Athletes, the political science department and is also a member of McMurry’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Balancing the demands of school, basketball and extracurricular activities doesn't come easy, but Tchenko takes it all in stride. Like in basketball, Tchenko has learned that when you take a fall, you get back up.
“I love the life lessons you learn from basketball,” explained Tchenko. “Learning how to deal with certain situations on the court has helped me with similar situations off the court.”
The President of McMurry Student Government has received numerous scholar-athlete awards including being a NCCAA Scholar-Athlete and a part of the ASC Academic All-Conference team. Tchenko shares that throughout his four years however, his favorite basketball memory is beating Division 1 University of Texas San Antonio at their arena his freshman year. But Tchenko has quite a few extraordinary memories off the court, too.
In the 2014-2015 season, Tchenko joined the War Hawks' team mid-season, after taking the fall semester off when offered an opportunity to work in the gubernatorial campaign for Wendy Davis. His love for politics stems from his political science education that he attributes to his favorite professors Dr. Tina Bertrand, Dr. Joel Olufowote and Dr. Paul Fabrizio.
In the final quarter of his college career, Tchenko is looking to the future following graduation in Spring 2017. Exploring his options, Tchenko is dribbling into the future and lining up his shot to the success and opportunities that await him. Swish.
